A Brief History of the Chevrolet Cobalt

As sales started to decline on the Chevy Cavalier and Prizm, Chevrolet decided to redesign their compact sedans. The brainchild of those efforts turned out to be the Chevy Cobalt.

Production started in 2004, and models began gracing the sales floor at Chevy dealerships in 2005. Sales were strong in the beginning, with over 212,000 units sold in their debut year.

Sales actually remained in the six figures for the entire model's run, with the exception of 2010, where only 97,376 models were sold. The 2008 special edition SS sold an even 5,000 vehicles, most likely hamstrung due to limited production.

Is a Chevrolet Cobalt a good car?

Despite robust sales throughout the vehicle's run, the Cobalt was not without controversy. It suffered a series of recalls starting in 2007 due to a lack of padding in the 2005 and 2006 models.

This padding defect reportedly could have caused head injuries to drivers in serious accidents, despite the fact that General Motors insisted such injuries would only result in the event that a driver was not wearing a safety belt.

There were also recalls connected to power steering defects in the 2010 Chevy Cobalt models, along with other compact cars produced by GM. Most devastatingly, some Cobalt models were plagued with faulty ignition switches which, after investigation, were found to be the determining cause in many fatal accidents.

This controversy may help explain why Chevrolet and GM discontinued sales of the Cobalt despite its popularity among consumers.

Comparing Chevrolet Cobalt Auto Insurance

Safety issues aside, your location may have as big of an impact - if not bigger - on how much you pay for your monthly premiums.

Everything from the state you live to the exact city and zip code where you park your car each night will alter how much your insurance company charges you for your coverage.

As you can see in the chart below, insurance laws are not uniform from one state to another. Living in a risky area has the potential to seriously increase the amount you pay for your Chevrolet Cobalt car insurance.

For Better or For Worse, car insurance is a business in the USA. And businesses only exist to make money, Despite whatever altruistic claims they may make to the General Public.

And without profits, a business simply cannot exist. Some insurance companies, in order to keep their business model sustainable, May charge more than others for their services.

Obviously, you want to purchase a policy from an insurance company whose business model is strong enough that they can pay out claims when you need them to help you after an accident.

At the same time, though, you can't be wasting hundreds of dollars a year on an overpriced insurance policy just so your provider can enjoy an excessive amount of profit.

As a consumer and as a responsible driver, it's up to you to find a company that will give you the coverage you need at a fair price.

Motorists who choose to purchase compact sedans are generally attracted to both the affordable MSRP, as well as such vehicles' fuel efficient MPG.

Interestingly enough, such consumers may either have excellent credit due to their frugal instincts, or they may be purchasing an affordable car that doesn't need much gas because they're on a tight budget.

Furthermore, their credit status doesn't just affect the interest rate on their auto loan - it can also affect how much they pay each month for their insurance coverage, as you can see in the chart below.

Many of these factors we touched on so far can take a long time and a lot of effort to change if your goal is to get a better price on your automotive insurance policy. Some, including where you live, may be downright impossible (or not worth the effort just to save a few dollars a month on your insurance premiums).

But there is one big thing you can do right now which can save you each month: compare quotes! The more quotes you compare from different insurance agencies in your ZIP code, the more likely you are to find the best deal on your Chevrolet Cobalt car insurance policy.
