Are you one of those forward-thinking motorists who enjoys driving a passenger car of the future? Well, then, we’re not surprised that you’re the proud owner of a Chevrolet Spark EV.
Unfortunately, such advanced technology may come at a price when it comes to your monthly Chevrolet Spark EV auto insurance rates.
But just because insurance companies want to charge you more for unfamiliar technology doesn’t mean that you should have to pay out the nose to keep your Chevy Spark EV covered properly. We can help you find the most affordable coverage right near you.
A Brief History of the Chevrolet Spark EV
Production of the Chevy Spark EV was announced back in October of 2011, along with the fact that the first generation would only be available in limited, select markets.
Oddly enough, this wasn’t the first time GM tried to manufacture and sell an all-electric vehicle. Its first attempt, known as the EV1, had a short but unsuccessful run until it was discontinued back in 1999.
The majority of Spark EV units were sold in Oregon, California, and Maryland while the vehicle was still in production. Throughout the entire lifespan of the vehicle, little more than 1,600 units were sold in total.
The release of the Chevy Bolt EV, an electric vehicle with a much longer range (and not to be confused with the Chevy Volt), was the final nail in the coffin that led to the discontinuation of the Chevy Spark EV in 2016. Chevrolet Spark EV in the News
Unfortunately for the Chevy Spark EV, its brief run was not only overshadowed but swept under the rug by the release of the Chevy Bolt EV.
Another thing that doomed the Chevy Spark EV before it had even hit the sales floor was the fact that it was originally designed to be a compliance car.
At the time, US lawmakers were pushing many car manufacturers to meet a zero-emissions requirement in order to help reduce the country’s CO2 footprint.
GM and Chevrolet never had any serious intentions of mass-producing the vehicle, much less advertising and/or marketing it to the general public.

In the chart below, you can see average rates for Spark EV drivers in major cities across all three states. Depending on where you live, your monthly premium may be much, much higher. Or, if you’re lucky, you could be paying less!

Furthermore, there are many different factors that may influence whether or not a given insurance company will offer you a good deal.
When these vehicles first came out, there were government subsidies for dealerships and consumers alike to encourage the sale and leasing of zero-emission vehicles.
There may have also been financial incentives offered to some of the major insurance providers across the country for offering affordable rates on electric vehicle auto insurance policies.
Of course, the only way to know for sure is to compare quotes from as many different providers as you can find.
Unfortunately, the popular Trend in the automotive insurance industry is to demand that motorists pay higher premiums on electric vehicles compared to their gasoline-powered (and hybrid versions, if they exist) counterparts.
Many car experts blame this on the fact that insurance companies are scared of the high prices associated with repairing a battery-powered engine or replacing an electric vehicle in the event of a total loss accident.
In the chart below, you can see how insurance rates on the Chevy Spark EV compare to its nearly identical, gas-powered twin.
Between the government understandably trying to encourage the sale of zero-emission vehicles, vehicle manufacturers trying to comply with federal laws while also making a profit, and insurance companies trying to make sure they don’t go broke offering coverage on technologically-advanced vehicles, finding a good deal on a Chevrolet Spark EV auto insurance policy can seem overwhelmingly complicated.
But it doesn’t have to be. You can take advantage of our knowledge and expertise and use our quote generating tool to find the best prices near you. Yes, it’s that simple!
