AAA stands for “American Automobile Association”. They started out as a lobbying body and service organization, but offer a wide variety of different services today. You may be familiar with their roadside assistance services and travel protection. But they also offer automotive insurance policies and similar financial products. The AAA network of auto clubs operates in geographically independent regions with the company headquarters residing in Heathrow, FL.

Founded in Chicago, IL, on March 4, 1902, AAA is one of the longest-running companies in the US. You may be surprised to find out that, as mentioned above, they started out as a lobbying organization to encourage state and federal government officials to do something about the deplorable road conditions which existed at the turn of the century. This dedication and passion has kept them going strong for over a century.

Recent customer reviews give AAA auto insurance 4 out of 5 stars according to JD Power. According to Consumer Affairs, though, customers give AAA 3 out of 5 stars. Yet AAA remains one of the highest rated vehicle insurance companies among consumers in the US. Numerous reports of highly satisfied customers can be found on independent customer review websites. Because AAA is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau, they don’t have an official rating; however, they have received 81 complaints since 2014. Only 3 of them remain unresolved.

AAA Insurance Discounts

AAA offers many of the more popular insurance discounts, such as discounts for good drivers and smart students. But there is more than meets the eye. The following discounts are unique to AAA and likely won’t be available from other providers:

VIN Etching DiscountRequires that you etch your vehicle’s VIN number into the window glass of your car. Since criminals can’t sell cars with intact VINs, this discount could get you 5-15% of your monthly premium.

Another way companies like AAA try to get ahead of their competition is to offer unique services and forms of coverage that other automotive insurance industries don’t. And those include:

Educating yourself about a prospective insurance company is a great first step. But knowing more about them won’t necessarily get you the best rate in town. For that, you have to find out what they are most likely to charge you:

The next step is to compare that number with other quotes from local companies. Granted, the numbers above are only estimates for popular demographics such as married homeowners (who often get great discounts) or drivers with poor credit (whose rates are usually higher) and these exact numbers cannot be guaranteed. However, any driver with a less-than-perfect credit score should compare at least two more companies to AAA before making a final decision.

AAA, unfortunately, doesn’t serve customers in every single state (however, you can find out if there’s an agent near you by selecting your state below and comparing quotes). Additionally, AAA does charge higher premiums for things like poor credit, but may offer discounts for homeowners or having a clean driving record. Lastly, AAA membership does earn you discounts at local, popular retailers – but you don’t necessarily need to have a AAA automotive insurance policy to access them.
