How does Geico DriveEasy app work?
To enroll in Geico DriveEasy program, download the application onto your mobile phone and complete the registration form.
You will need your Geico login information. Set up the permissions on your phone and always stay logged into the app.
Data about your trips will automatically be recorded and uploaded to the cloud; there, it will be processed and scored. Trip scores appear in your mobile app.
GIECO DriveEasy app detects when you’re driving versus when you’re a passenger and will not record passenger trips. If your device incorrectly records you as a driver, you can correct it in the app.
Unfortunately, the app cannot differentiate between commercial driving and personal driving.
Videos are available on the Geico website to help answer any questions you have about the DriveEasy program.
You can reach Geico customer service through the application or the Geico virtual assistant on the company website.
What driving habits does Geico DriveEasy track?
Geico insurance costs fluctuate depending on your age, driving record, and where you live. By using the DriveEasy app, your driving habits will be recorded and scored.
The table below shows what driving habits the app tracks and how it impacts your score:
Score Component | Geico DriveEasy Definition |
---|---|
Distracted driving | Handheld phonecalls and active phone use when driving faster than 6 miles per hour will be tracked and monitored. If a passenger uses your phone, it will still count against you. |
Hard braking | Your rate of deceleration while driving will be tracked, producing a hard-braking score. |
Cornering | How fast you are driving when cornering will be used to determine if you were driving safely. Slow down when going into turns to maintain control of your vehicle. |
Smoothness | How you control your speed will be tracked. Frequent changes of speed and abrupt stopping increases your chances of getting into an accident. |
Road type | The type of road you are driving on and the speed limits will be detected. Complex roads with changing speed limits are riskier than straight highways. |
Distance driven | How long you drive from one place to another will be tracked and monitored. |
Time of day | Driving late at night or early in the morning is considered riskier than general daytime driving. |
Weather | The type of weather you are driving in is detected to determine road conditions. In bad weather, visibility is impacted, and conditions are considered risky. |
It takes 24 to 48 hours for your score to update.
Geico DriveEasy also detects two types of distracted driving habits when you’re moving faster than 6 miles per hour:
- Handheld phone calls
- Active phone use
Touching your phone for any reason is considered active phone use by Geico, even if done by a passenger. Hands-free phone calls and passive phone use does not impact your overall score.
Is Geico DriveEasy app worth it?
The Geico DriveEasy app aims to teach customers to drive safer. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), telematics programs monitoring commercial fleets led to an 80 percent decrease in crash rates. Personal drivers can also benefit from such programs.
If your Geico quote is already low, and you don’t drive very much, the DriveEasy program may be worth your while.
However, if you often drive for work, have members on your policy who are unwilling to participate, or are uncomfortable with a company tracking your data, this program might not be for you.
