Can't-Miss Facts

  • Liberty Mutual RightTrack is a telematics device for your vehicle that tracks your driving habits
  • Drivers using the RightTrack program can save between 5-30% on their auto insurance premiums
  • Liberty Mutual offers three RightTrack programs available in different states: a plug-in, a tag, and a mobile app

The Liberty Mutual RightTrack program is a telematics device that monitors your driving habits. After evaluating your driving for 90 days, RightTrack provides you with a score.

Your score can earn you a discount on your auto insurance rates between 5-30% that lasts for the life of your policy. Anyone who uses the program is guaranteed a discount.

What is Liberty Mutual RightTrack?

Are you new to driving? Maybe you have a ticket on your driving record, or you just aren’t happy with your rates right now. The RightTrack program through Liberty Mutual gives drivers an opportunity to lower their rates through safe driving practices. Rather than looking at your driving history, RightTrack evaluates your driving habits right now for a period of 90 days. It puts the control back in your hands.

Yes, there will be one-offs like the car that pulls in front of you at the last minute causing a hard brake. If you get in an accident, an auto insurance provider can’t assume you’re a safe driver who just got unlucky under normal circumstances. This Liberty Mutual telematics device you use keeps track of everything. So unless hard braking is a common trend, it won’t be an issue. Based on your safety score after the test period, you’ll receive a discount on your policy between5-30%. The discount lasts for the lifetime of your auto insurance policy.

What happens if you have less-than-perfect driving behavior? Some things are harder to correct in 90 days than others. Drivers who use RightTrack don’t have to worry about cancelled automobile insurance policies or other serious complications. Sending Liberty Mutual a snapshot of your driving is meant to help you save money, not stress about your driving habits.

Originally, RightTrack was a Safeco insurance program. Liberty Mutual owns Safeco and recently adapted it for both companies.

There are three versions available in different states: a plug-in device for your vehicle, a tag that sticks to your windshield, and a mobile app. When you sign up, the site will give you more information on which one and how it works. The rules also vary between states.

How does Liberty Mutual RightTrack work?

When you join Liberty Mutual, you can also enroll in the RightTrack program available in your state. You will immediately receive a small sign-on discount.

  • Plug-in users will receive their device after signing the terms and conditions. You must plug the device into the OBD port of your car within 30 days of receiving it.
  • Tag users must download the RightTrack app. It will trigger a shipment, and you will receive your device within a few days. You have 21 days to activate your tag. Stick it to your windshield behind the mirror to avoid obstructing your view.
  • Mobile app users will receive an email with instructions after enrolling in the program. All drivers on your policy need to download the program.

Once your device is set up, the next steps are up to you. You can drive like you normally do. One of the great things about telematics is they can provide real-time feedback to help you improve your driving. If you make these adjustments early, you can improve your score (and therefore your discount) before the 90 days is up.

To add a driver to your program, contact Liberty Mutual customer service. The Liberty Mutual phone number is 1-866-274-0892.

You can opt-out at any time, even during the 90-day review period. Keep in mind you will lose any associated premium discount as the records don’t carry over to other insurers.

What driving habits does Liberty Mutual RightTrack monitor?

After you access your RightTrack account using your Liberty Mutual login, your device or mobile app will track various driving habits. How do you know what it’s paying attention to? If you follow the feedback from the site, you can identify some of your own bad habits. You don’t have to wait, though. Many of the bad driving habits the system watches for could seem like common sense.

For example, do you speed? Do you practice rapid acceleration? While you may not see the connection initially, do you brake hard on a regular basis? If you’re going over the speed limit, hard braking to avoid collision is more common. All it takes is a small miscalculation to get in an accident.

RightTrack devices also monitor how far you drive. More time on the road creates more risk. The system also accounts for time of day. Due to visibility and other issues, nighttime driving is inherently more risky.

The initial premium discount and the bump you get after 90 days provide immediate gratification. If you switch companies later on, you’ll also see the difference in your auto insurance quote when you don’t have accidents or tickets because you’ve overcome poor driving habits.

Many insurance companies offer discounts for different safety features like lane departure warning, collision warning, or even anti-theft devices. These are all meant to keep you safer, but only if you use them. RightTrack is similar in that you have to use it to get the full benefits. The system can guide you, but it’s up to each driver to make changes and adjustments to be a safer driver now and in the future.
