What is Travelers IntelliDrive?
Travelers Insurance IntelliDrive is a telematics program, or UBI, that uses a mobile app to monitor and reward your driving habits and techniques. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), nine of the top ten insurance companies now offer a UBI program.
Travelers advertises that safe drivers can receive up to 30 percent off of their insurance policy at the time of renewal. However, high-risk drivers may see a rate increase.
However, the actual discount amount varies by state. See what we mean in the table below.
Potential Savings Amount | Qualifying States |
---|---|
40 percent | NV |
30 percent | AZ, CO, CT, IL, IN, KY, MN, MO, NH, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, WI |
20 percent | AL, AR, DC, GA, IA, ID, KS, MD, ME, MS, MT, NE, NJ, NM, OK, SC, UT, VT, WA |

How does Travelers IntelliDrive work?
You must sign up and make a Travelers insurance login to enroll in the IntelliDrive program. Then, install the IntelliDrive app on your smartphone. The app automatically collects data when you’re in a vehicle.
The program lasts for 90 days. You’ll receive your score in the app, as well as driving advice and techniques.
All drivers on your insurance policy must use the app, or you risk losing your discount. Travelers encourage teens to use the application to learn better driving techniques.
Enrolled users can visit MyTravelers.com for more information about the application and program or call (888) 303-1217.
What driving habits does Travelers IntelliDrive track?
Travelers IntelliDrive tracks five distinct driving behaviors.
- Time of day: avoid driving at night to improve your score.
- Speed: High speeds mean higher-risk driving.
- Acceleration: Smoother accelerations are better for your score and car.
- Braking: Hard braking often leads to lower scores.
- Distractions: Physically interacting with your phone in any way while in the car lowers your score.
After each trip, you can review and verify your route and performance in the app. If you’re a passenger in a vehicle, but the app records you as the driver, you have ten days to correct the trip information.
You have 45 days to opt-out of the program if you choose. Discounts or rate increases go on your policy at the time of its renewal.
Is Travelers IntelliDrive worth it?
By using Travelers IntelliDrive, you can improve your driving techniques. Teen drivers can also use the app to help them learn to be safer drivers. If you see your score is low in the app, you have 45 days to opt-out of the program, providing you with a fail-safe.
Teens learning to drive and people who don’t drive often and have perfect driving histories may benefit from this program.
However, before choosing a UBI program, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) encourages drivers to understand the details of the company’s data collection process.
Some Travelers Intellidrive reviews point out that the program comes with a privacy policy that uses data for research and development purposes. In other words, Travelers does not protect your privacy.
Also, getting stuck in heavy traffic or taking a long drive can cause your score to drop, potentially leading to a rate increase instead of actual savings.
It’s essential to compare the Travelers IntelliDrive automobile insurance rates to other reputable providers near you before choosing an insurer.
